The Accelerated 5400-RM Out-of-Band (OOB) Cellular Remote Manager allows organizations to securely manage remote devices and network equipment. In the event of a network failure the 5400-RM can be used to access and control a wide range of network and site equipment and provide cellular failover connectivity.

Through its next generation embedded cellular modem technology (LTE/3G), the 5400-RM can deliver seamless and uninterrupted remote management from a centralized network operation facility using aView™ even during primary network downtime.

Out-of-Band Device Management

Every minute of network downtime costs you time and money! It is important to invest in resilient network infrastructure that minimizes unplanned network disruptions and downtime. Being able to monitor, control and maintain anytime access to critical infrastructure and to provide a path to remote remediation of network or device related issues is paramount to business continuity.

When your primary network goes down being able to troubleshoot critical infrastructure from afar is invaluable. This allows you to avoid having local staff checking network and power connections, or avoid asking remote staff to trouble shoot or power cycle devices. It also can provide cost savings by removing the need for truck rolls or skilled IT technicians going onsite. Accelerated’s 5400-RM provides access to the serial console ports of critical infrastructure to thus provide a redundant and secure path to devices at remote sites.

Serial Ports and Advanced Networking Capabilities

The four serial ports on the 5400-RM are typically used for access to other network equipment via their serial/console ports. Console port access may be the primary means of configuration for strategic or critical network equipment. Alternatively console port access may be needed for critical equipment in the event that the network connection to, or configuration of this equipment has failed. The serial ports may be disabled, enabled, configured and accessed via centralized remote management including optional use of TCP, telnet or SSH connections.

The RS232 standard requires support for baud rates up to 9600 baud on shielded multicore cable up to 50 feet (15 meters) long. For the 5400-RM, the use of standard CAT 5 cables will enable serial communication at all baud rates up to 50 feet. CAT5 unshielded twisted pair cable lengths much longer than 50 feet have been verified at 9600 baud but are non-standard and are not guaranteed.

Like all Accelerated products, you can centrally manage the Accelerated 5400-RM with our cloud-based management portal, aView™. This secure portal allows you to rapidly deploy and manage a large number of remote locations. From aView™, you can remotely monitor, configure and update single or groups of devices including managing the serial ports of 5400-RMs.

The 5400-RM can be deployed alongside a variety of distributed equipment, both network and infrastructure to provide out-of-band management, real-time monitoring and emergency response capability. The 5400-RM has four RJ45 based serial ports capable of providing Out-of-Band support for four remote devices. Commands and device management is protected using Secure Socket Layer (SSL), Secure Shell (SSH) and Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256. How does the 5400-RM provide backup WAN connectivity and Out-Of-Band (OOB) Management at the same time?

The OOB TCP ports are specified as exceptions to be reserved for access to the Accelerated 5400-RM and the 4 serial ports. For example, TCP ports 63000 is reserved and mapped to the general device, 63001 is reserved for direct access to port 1, etc. All other packets will be sent to the end device using the 5400-RM as backup WAN connectivity.

What is the maximum speed of the serial ports on the 5400-RM?

The maximum speed for the serial ports is 230,400 bits per second.

What is the Pinouts for the 5400-RM RJ-45 ports?

The 5400-RM ports are designed as DTE ports and typically only require a straight through Category 5 cable. Here are the pinouts:

What is the default password for the 5400-RM?

The default user is root and the default password is default.

How do I factory reset the 5400-RM?

  1. Power off the 5400-RM.
  2. Power on the 5400-RM.
  3. After the 5400-RM has been powered on for at least 30 seconds, briefly press the Erase button located on the back of the 5400-RM between its USB port and LAN Ethernet port.

What IP address does the 5400-RM use?

By default, the 5400-RM will use 192.168.210.1.  You can always access the 5400-RM through its LAN Ethernet port at this IP address.

Can the 5400-RM use its LAN Ethernet port as an internet connection?

Yes.  By default the 5400-RM will try to use DHCP to get an internet connection through its LAN Ethernet port.  Typically, this is used during staging so the 5400-RM can get its configuration and have the proper settings for connecting with its cellular modem.  Please note that the 5400-RM cannot use its LAN Ethernet as an internet connection when it is configured for OOB Management, since it is providing WAN connectivity to the end device connected to its LAN Ethernet port.

Where is the label with the MAC address and serial number for the 5400-RM?

How do I upgrade the firmware?

  1. Download the appropriate firmware file from Accelerated.
  2. Connect to the 5400-RM’s web UI by connecting your PC to the LAN Ethernet port of the 5400-RM and then going to http://192.168.210.1.
  3. Select the System tab on the left side of the page.
  4. Select the Browse button next to the Firmware image section.
  5. Browse for and select the downloaded firmware file.
  6. Click the Update Firmware button.

Do not turn off or unplug the 5400-RM while it is upgrading its firmware.
The upgrade process should take less than one minute.

How do I upgrade the firmware using aView™?

  1. Login to aView™ and use the Search tool to find the 5400-RM by searching for its MAC address.
  2. Select the MAC address of the 5400-RM to bring up its details page.
  3. Select the View Configuration link in the Configuration section of the page.
  4. Once viewing the configuration profile, select the Edit pencil icon at the top right of the page.
  5. Select the appropriate firmware version from the Firmware drop-down list.
  6. Click the Update button.

The 5400-RM will automatically upgrade its firmware when it performs its nightly configuration check-in (1AM UTC).  If you want to apply the firmware update to the 5400-RM right away, go back to the details page for the 5400-RM (see steps 1 and 2) and select the Check Configuration option from the Commands drop-down list at the top-right of the page.

Does the 5400-RM require a SIM card?

Yes, the 5400-RM requires a properly provisioned SIM card.

What size is the SIM card?

The 5400-RM supports standard mini-SIMs (2FF).

How do I insert a SIM into the 5400-RM?

The SIM card should be inserted notch-end first with the gold contacts face down.  The SIM slot is located on the back of the 5400-RM between the power connector and the USB port.  The SIM will click into place when fully inserted.

Does the 5400-RM fail back to 3G?

Yes, if the 5400-RM doesn’t see a 4G LTE network available, it will automatically fallback to the highest available 3G network (HSPA+, HSDPA, EV-DO, etc.).

How do I specify a custom APN on the 5400-RM?

  1. Connect to the 5400-RM’s web UI by connecting your PC to the LAN Ethernet port of the 5400-RM and then going to http://192.168.210.1.
  2. Select the Configuration tab on the left side of the page.
  3. Type in the custom APN into the APN entry.
  4. Optional:  If the custom APN requires a specific username and password, please input those into the Username and Password entries.
  5. Click the Save button.
